Study Mode

Your collection is already your study set.

One toggle unlocks spaced repetition for everything you've photographed. No setup, no typing, no deck to build — just the items you already collected.

Answer

Most study apps make you build your deck from scratch. Thngs users already have it — every photograph is a card waiting to be flipped.

Long-press any collection. One toggle. Done.

Getting started

Three taps from collection to study session.

I

Long-press a collection

Any collection with at least one item can become a study set. The contextual menu appears on long-press.

Long-press → Edit
II

Enable Study Mode

Toggle on Study Mode, then choose Flashcard or Multiple Choice. Tap Update to save.

Study → Toggle → Update
III

Start your session

A blue Study badge appears on the card. Tap it to begin. The algorithm queues what's due today — nothing else.

Blue badge → Study

Two modes

Choose how you want to be tested.

🃏

Flashcard

Flip the card, see the answer, then grade yourself. The algorithm schedules your next review based on how you rated it.

  • Tap to flip — photo on front, answer on back
  • Self-grade: Again, Good, or Easy
  • SM-2 stretches intervals when you know it cold
  • Session summary: reviewed, correct %, per-rating counts

Multiple Choice

See the photo, then pick the correct answer from four options. Gets the answer right or wrong automatically — no self-grading needed.

  • Four choices drawn from your collection
  • Auto-advances 1 second after selection
  • Lower friction — great for larger collections
  • Switch modes any time in collection settings

The algorithm

Same scheduling as Anki. No configuration needed.

Study Mode uses SM-2 — the spaced repetition algorithm that powers Anki, SuperMemo, and most serious flashcard apps. Intervals stretch when you know something well. They compress when you miss it.

The result: you study what you need to study, when you need to study it. Items you know cold disappear for weeks. Items you keep missing come back the next day.

"The average Anki user reviews fewer than 15 cards per day to maintain a 500-card deck after the first month." — common benchmark from the spaced repetition literature.

Nothing to tune. Enable Study Mode and the algorithm handles the rest.

Stays on your phone. Full stop.

Study progress is stored only on your device. Not on Thngs servers. Not synced anywhere. Not associated with your account.

Your collection photos already live on your device. Study Mode is entirely local — it reads what's there and writes only to on-device storage.

Who uses it

If you photograph it, you can learn it.

🎓

Students

Photograph diagrams, specimens, maps, and vocabulary cards. Build a study set from your actual coursework, not a generic one online.

Collectors

Know your collection cold — vintages, mint marks, pressing variants, species IDs. The study set grows as your collection does.

Field learners

Birds, plants, mushrooms, constellations. Photograph what you find outdoors and drill identifications until recognition is instant.
